Muslims are taught
that the way to attain salvation and gain entry to "paradise" is based
on their faithfulness to Islam and through "works."
There are many
other religions that also teach salvation by works and consequently
retain rigid control over their congregation through a heirarchy of
clergy and overwhelming instructions. This type of religion is said
to be one of "legalism."
Here are two examples requiring works
on the part of Muslims:
"To every People have We appointed rites
and ceremonies which they must follow: let them not dispute with thee
on the matter, but do thou invite (them) to thy Lord: for thou art
assuredly on the Right Way." (Qur'an: 022.067)
"Allah will admit
those who believe and work righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which
rivers flow: they shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold
and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk." (Qur'an: 022.023)
A
significant difference is where Christian faith teaches that
salvation is not actually attained by accomplishing "religious works"
nor by observing denominationally imposed rituals and traditions.
According to the New Testament, Salvation is a Free Gift of God given
to the person who acknowledges their sinful nature, their helplessness
in striving for perfection, and who sincerely wishes to seek God. One's
relationship with God is reconciled through placing faith and trust
in Jesus as personal Lord and Saviour; the Mediator between God and
mankind.
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God
is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans: 6:23)
"For
by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: It
is the Gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
(Ephesians:
2: 8-9)
God wants to hear the sincere prayer of one's heart when
they pray to Him for help. However, many religions instruct followers
to partake in religious rituals and repetitive recitation of "canned
prayers." Here is what Jesus had to say in that regard:
"...
well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,This people draweth nigh unto
me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart
is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines
the commandments of men. (Mt. 15:8-9)
